In the desert areas of California, lives Salvia Apiana, a small perennial plant also called "White Sage," because of the characteristic light gray color of its leaves and its, indeed, white flowers. Native Americans considered it a sacred plant, attributing to it important purifying properties. When burned, in fact, the leaves give off and spread a smoke charged with negative ions, ideal for cleaning the air and the environment (such as one's home) and purifying the body and its energy field. They believed that "White Sage" made evil spirits sick and they fled as soon as they smelled it, unlike the good spirits who appreciated its scent. Burning the famous "Smudges" (bunches of leaves) of "White Sage" also helps keep away annoying insects and is an excellent repellent for moths. An interesting study conducted by the University of Arizona in 199 also highlighted its antibacterial potential. "White sage" is also widely appreciated on a sensory level.
